International Workers Day

Good afternoon everyone,
We need your help promoting this event!

International Workers Day happens every year on May 1st. This year the IAM is hosting a Celebration and Living Wage Rally at Terminal 1, Departures level, at the Inukshuks. The rally starts at 1 pm, speakers start at 1:30pm.  Our goal is to have at least 50 to 100 attendees, we really need your help to promote this.  If we work together, we can make sure this is a successful event!

Currently District Lodge 140 in the Central Region is engaged in 10 rounds of bargaining with 14 rounds total for 2024. This year at each of these bargaining tables we are putting living wages forward as a top priority because there are many of our members that are still earning minimum wage or just above minimum wage. This includes many of our part-time coworkers at Air Canada.

For our Air Canada members that will be in bargaining in 2026. Our mobilization efforts need to start now so that we are creating solidarity well before negotiations begin. Events like this one create the space for workers to come together to show strength and solidarity. Over the next few months we will be working to create more ways to bring workers together so that we can build some momentum for a living wage and for the 2026 round of negotiations. It is also good practice to rally, if in the event one of our bargaining units takes job action during this year’s rounds of negotiations we will need to mobilize quickly.

We are looking for volunteers, if you would like to help by distributing flyers or putting up posters, please let us know by reaching out to Mike Corrado, Dave Flowers, or myself. On the day of the event, we will need a few people wearing safety vests to guide people around and to look out for one another.

Our current speaker’s list includes:

GVP Chartrand,
PDGC Flowers,
2323 President Seebalak,
CLC ST Lily Chang,
OFL ST Ahmad Gaied, and
Peel Regional Labour Council President Ram Selvarajah.

Toronto and York Labour Council have also been invited to send a speaker.
